“Happiness leeches” come in three major types:
- The grouches, who are chronically unhappy, pessimistic, anxious, irritable, or needy.
- The jerks, who constantly challenge or find fault, behave rudely or cruelly, or dominate the conversation.
- The slackers, who don’t do their fair share.
Not only do happiness leeches behave badly themselves, they also spread their bad behavior. Because of the “spillover effect,” when we see others act like grouches, jerks, or slackers, we’re more likely to imitate them.
